(upbeat music) - Welcome to Daily Drive Time Devotions. This is day two of our
look through John chapter 17. We're going to be looking at verses five to 10 today.

Yesterday we began by getting the setting, getting the feeling, the sense of
this prayer, this holy moment where we get to listen to the prayer of Jesus.
Today and the rest of this week, I'd like to take some time to look at how you
and I can be an answer to Jesus' prayer. I know that when Jesus prays, it's
going to be answered.

It's a prayer of faith. It's the right prayer. So I have full confidence that
Jesus' prayer is going to be answered.

But the question is, do I have the faith to be an answer to the prayer of Jesus?
And as you walk through these verses, you're going to see, we're going to see together
that we are an answer to Jesus' prayer when four things happen. That the first
of those four things is made clear in verse five.

John 17 five says, "And now, Father, "glorify me in your presence "with the
glory that I had with you "before the world began. " When am I an answer to
Jesus' prayer? I'm an answer to Jesus' prayer when God is getting the glory,
when Jesus is getting the glory.

That's when I'm an answer to his prayer. This word glory is used eight times in
this prayer. It's a very important theme in the prayer.

So I need to pray for God to get the glory. Adrian Rogers, the pastor, said,
"When we begin to pray more "with the glory of God in mind, "our prayer life is
going to be more like "the prayer life of the Lord Jesus, "because Jesus prayed
with the glory of God in mind. " Now what does that mean, glory?

Well, to be glorified is to make shown, to make evident something maybe that was
hidden, a value or a richness that was hidden, to open it up and make it seen to
everyone. And God wants to show who he is to the world, and he wants to do it
through you. He wants to do it through believers.

Jesus wants to show his glory for us, he wants to show his glory to us, and he
wants to show his glory through us. He wants to show his glory for us on the
cross. He was glorified on the cross as he gave his life for us.

He wants to show his glory to us in heaven. We're going to see that at the end
of this prayer. Jesus talks about that, but as he begins the prayer, he talks
about the fact that he wants to show his glory through us on earth.

That's a theme that's throughout this prayer, that God wants to show his glory
through us on earth. Now you might think on one level, how could he do that? I'm
just a human being, but Christ in you is the hope of glory.

And through God's spirit in you and Christ in you, God can show himself to the
world, even through you, even through me. Jesus taught us in this prayer the
road to showing God's glory in our lives. Back in verse four that we looked at
yesterday, he taught us that the road is obedience.

I brought you glory on this earth, Jesus said, by doing the things that you gave
me to do, by obeying. That the real glory of life is doing God's will. And the
real way to show God's glory in life is by doing God's will.

And Jesus indicates here that greater obedience equals greater glory. Whenever I
do what God's shown me to do, it's going to bring glory to God in some way. I may
see it immediately, I may never see it on this earth.

But the Bible teaches that whenever I do what God has given me to do, it's going to
bring glory to God in some way. In fact, giving glory to God in a sentence is
this, I did what God gave me to do. That's what Jesus said.

And if I could get to the end of my life and say in just one small arena of
life, I did what God gave me to do, I would be so deeply privileged to be able
to pray that. But also I would know that I had given God glory in that. Now most
of us look at our lives and we see what we didn't do.

God gave me to do this and I missed it. I was supposed to do this and I missed
it. But don't look to the past.

Look to today. How can I do today what God has given me to do today? What could
be greater than that?

Nothing could be greater than that. Nothing is more important than that. I did
what God gave me to do.

So today I invite you with Jesus' invitation to focus on this single question.
Am I doing what God gave me to do today? It's interesting that Jesus ends by
saying, I brought you glory that I had before the world began.

But he also talks about how glory has come to me through them. Listen to how
that glory came to Jesus through his disciples in verses six to 10. Important
verses for you and I as disciples of Jesus Christ.

How does God get glory through us? John 17, six to 10. I have revealed you to
those whom you gave me out of the world.

They were yours. You gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. Now they
know that everything you have given me comes from you.

For I gave them the word you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with
certainty that I came from you and they believed that you sent me. I pray for
them.

I'm not praying for the world, but for those you have given me for they are
yours. All I have is yours and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me
through them.

Now a question about these verses before we talk about glory has come to me
through them. Many people that I've talked through these verses with have asked,
why doesn't Jesus pray for the world? He says, I'm not praying for the world,
but for those whom you've given me.

Well, obviously Jesus loves the world. He died for the world on the cross for
all who will accept him. But Jesus' focus is on working through us who know him
to reach out to the world.

Just look at his three years of ministry. He didn't just minister to the world.
He primarily ministered to 12 disciples.

He focused on training those disciples so that they could reach out to the
world. And in this prayer he prays for his disciples so that they can reach out
to the world. And even now he desires to work through you as his disciple so
that you can reach out to the world.

That's why Jesus focuses his prayer on his disciples because that's how he is
chosen. That's his method to reach out to the world that's in need. Your God's
plan for reaching out to the world, Jesus' plan.

And as Jesus prays, he prays with joy because he says, glory has come to me
through them. Now my question is, how did that happen? Because I can learn how
these disciples lived in such a way, responded in such a way, so that glory came
to Jesus through them, even with all their mistakes and they made some, even
with all their stumblings and they had a lot of them.

Jesus was able to pray, glory has come to me through them. If I can learn how
that happened, then I can see how it can happen in my life. How did Jesus see
that glory had come to him through these disciples?

The answer to that tells you and I how we can become an answer to Jesus' prayer.
How we can glorify God in our daily lives. And look at the list.

As you just walk through these verses, I glorify Jesus when, he says in verse
six, I've revealed you to those who you gave me out of the world. When the
Father is revealed to me through Jesus, that brings glory to Jesus. When I let
Jesus reveal God's compassion, God's love in my life, that brings glory to
Jesus.

As you go on through these verses, he says, they have obeyed your word. I bring
glory to Jesus in this world when I obey God's word, when I do what God has
given me to do. Walking on through these verses, he says that they recognize the
gift that you gave.

When I recognize God's gift of salvation first, and then I recognize his gifts
in daily life, his spiritual gifts, his daily gifts, that brings glory to Jesus.
When I thank God for his gifts, he talks about the word again and he says, they
accepted the word that you gave me and that I gave to them. So when I accept
God's word, when I trust God's word more than anything else, that brings glory
to Jesus.

And he also says that they believe the truth. They believe that you sent me.
When I believe God's truth, God's truth particularly that Jesus is sent by God,
that brings glory.

To Jesus Christ. So what I'd like to do now is spend a couple of minutes, a
little bit longer time in prayer today, glorifying God in our lives right now,
doing the very things that Jesus said to do. Why wait?

Why wouldn't we want to do it right now? And as we pray, just in prayer and
talking to Jesus Christ, say Jesus, right now, show me the Father, reveal the
Father to me. Help me to see who he really is.

Help me to see how much God really loves me. Maybe even as you're praying, you
haven't recognized God's love recently. Maybe you've never recognized God's love
in your life.

Never said, Father, I need to have a relationship with you. There's no greater
way to glorify Jesus Christ than to say, I pray that I would begin a
relationship with the Father through Jesus Christ and what he did for me on the
cross. I pray for forgiveness.

I pray for a new fresh life. And I pray for direction in daily life from you,
Jesus. I want to follow you.

You've revealed the Father to me. Help me to follow you from now on. You begin
your relationship with God with that prayer and then you continue that
relationship asking Jesus to reveal the Father to you in new and fresh ways
every day.

Reveal the Father's compassion. Reveal the Father's will. Reveal the Father to
me today.

Say to Jesus Christ in prayer as we talk about glorifying him, I do accept your
word. You might have to admit I have a tough time doing that sometimes. There
are times when I want to live my way and not your way, when I know the right thing
to do, but I do what I want to do anyway, selfishly.

But in this moment, right now, I accept your word. And I pray for the strength
to live out your word in my life. I want to not only accept your word, but I want
to obey your word.

And I need your strength to do that, Jesus. I need your power to do that. But I
see in a new way today that I'm not doing that just for me.

I'm not doing that just to check off some spiritual to-do list. I'm doing that
in order to bring glory to you on this earth. So I pray for the strength to obey
your word today.

God, I recognize your gift. I believe the truth that Jesus has sent into this
world for me. And in believing that truth, I am so thankful.

Thank you for what you've given for me. And I pray that I could live this day
not feeling like life owes me something, but instead knowing that you have given
me everything in Jesus Christ. And in knowing that, I pray that I'd be able to
give myself back to you and back to those that are around me.

And in doing that, whether I see it or not, I pray, God, that the glory would go
back to you, that people would know that it's because you are in me and because
you are a God of love and power. Thank you, Jesus. Thank you, Jesus, that you
pray for me.
