We're going to be studying together the book of Proverbs. I know we're in the middle of the study of Matthew, but I happen to be gone on mission trips all of the month of August. So this allows me to be able to be gone and do these mission trips and then get back to the study of Matthew in September. And I always love studying Proverbs in the summer anyway. It's a great book to study, 31 days in August, 31 chapters in Proverbs, you sort of study a Proverb chapter a day, and it adds some great, great wisdom to your life, and we always need wisdom. So enjoy studying Proverbs this month, and then I'll see you back for the study of Matthew in the beginning of September. Welcome, we are beginning today a study of the book of Proverbs. This study through the book of Proverbs, we're going to be doing a little bit differently than most of our other studies in drive time devotions. In most of our studies, we're going through taking five days to look at one chapter, and in taking five days, we're going through a few verses each day. As we go through Proverbs, we're going to take a chapter a day of the book of Proverbs. As we look at that chapter, instead of looking at all the verses, I've chosen a couple of verses out of each chapter, one of the principles in that chapter to speak to our lives. Now if you've read the book of Proverbs, you know we could do this 20 or 30 times through because there's so many significant things in this chapter. We are also going to be doing a little bit shorter studies, and looking at just a few verses, I wanted you to have the opportunity in a shorter look at the book of Proverbs to really focus in on a couple of verses. So instead of being 10 or 12 minutes as we usually do, these will usually be five or six minute studies. So for those of you who need the word of God, but your drive time is only five or six minutes, you're rejoicing right now, this is going to work for you. So we're going to take a look at a couple of verses each day, in a chapter each day. So we're beginning with Proverbs chapter one, and today I'd like to focus on verses two and three of Proverbs chapter one. Let me read those verses to you. The purpose of these Proverbs is to teach people wisdom and discipline, and to help them understand wise sayings. Through these Proverbs, people will receive instruction and discipline, good conduct, and doing what is right and just and fair. For this next month or so, we're going to be looking together at a Proverb a day from the book of Proverbs. And as we look at these Proverbs, we're really looking at a 31-day promise in these 31 chapters of Proverbs about what God can do in your life. Proverbs is a book that can give a real power boost to your personal growth. Proverbs is a book about genuine wisdom. It shows the kind of wisdom that gives the power to get your life under control, to make consistently excellent choices, to say no to destructive temptation, to better your relationships, to strengthen your career. The book of Proverbs is not focused on just knowing about wisdom. It's focused on doing wisdom. It's about smart living, the ability to apply the principles of God to the realities of life. Wisdom is both harder and easier than you might think. It's harder because it's not just about knowing the right thing to do. It's instead deciding to do the right thing. But wisdom is easier because the power behind wisdom is not from us, but from the God who loves us. We're leaning on Him to live out these principles. As we go through these Proverbs about wisdom during this next month or so together, I want to invite you to not only listen to drive time devotions and a couple of verses that we're going to talk about, but to read for yourself the entire chapter that we're talking about. Now Billy Graham has said, "For a number of years, I made it a practice to read five Psalms a day and one chapter of Proverbs a day. The Psalms teach us how to get along with God and the Proverbs teach us how to get along with our fellow man. " Well, I'm inviting you to read not five Psalms a day and one Proverb a day, but one Proverb a day as we walk through this. I invite you to join in as we read together or you reread through this book and see what God can do to make a significant impact and difference in your personal life, your family life, your work life, your daily life. As we end each day's look at a Proverb, I want to pray together for God's wisdom. Let's do that right now. God, we pray for your wisdom. You've told us in the New Testament that if anyone lacks wisdom, you will give it. And you tell us here in Proverbs that you want to give us wisdom, that even as we read your word, you will give us instruction and discipline and good conduct and doing what is right and just and fair. And my prayer is that as we go through this study together, exactly that would happen. I pray this. Together with confidence, because we know Jesus, that what you tell us you will do, you do. We can count on you. And so we pray for a new sense of wisdom to live the kind of life that you made us to live. Let me pray for it in Jesus name. Amen. Join us tomorrow. We're going to be looking at the second chapter of the Book of Proverbs, a couple of great verses, verses two to four out of that second chapter.
