2, verses 2 to 4. These are verses that sometimes people just read over fairly
quickly as they're reading through the book of Revelation to get to the good
stuff about how everything gets destroyed. But let me let you know, if you
understand these verses, Revelation 5, 1 to 4, then it unlocks the understanding
of all the verses that are to come.

Let me share with you what happens after this scroll is brought out. What
happens to John as he sees this revelation? When you understand John's emotional
response here, you begin to understand the importance of this scroll.

Let me read for you verses 2 to 4. "And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a
loud voice, 'Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll? ' But no one
in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look
inside it.

I wept and wept, because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or
to look inside. " Now, as you read about John weeping and weeping in these
verses, one of the keys to understanding the book of Revelation is answering
this question, why did John weep? What was it about what was happening here that
caused him to have such a strong emotional response?

Well, he wept, he cried and cried because he knew what it meant. You don't cry
over something you're confused by that you don't understand. He knew exactly
what this meant.

For you and I, as we read about this scroll and some of what happens in the book
of Revelation, at first we don't understand, so we don't cry, we might scratch
our heads. We don't weep, but he wept because he knew what it meant. When you go
to a movie, you weep if a relationship is lost because you understand the
meaning of that relationship.

You weep if a hurt is given because you understand how that person was hurt. If
you don't understand it, you're not going to weep. Here John understood it.

He understood what it meant that there was no one worthy to open that scroll. We
talked about it yesterday because there was no one worthy to open the scroll.
That meant that an inheritance would be lost.

If no one could open the scroll, the inheritance would be lost. And in a culture
of like that day that depended on land, nothing could be worse than to lose your
family's inheritance. It was a tragedy that would not only affect the rest of
your life, it would impact your family for the rest of their generations.

An inheritance lost, never to be gained again. I want you and I to experience
emotionally some of what John was experiencing in this moment. Now, you might
know that there is going to be someone found worthy.

We're going to talk about that tomorrow. You might have read ahead or heard
ahead in the book of Revelation. But just for this moment, stand with the
Apostle John and experience what he experienced.

Here is this incredible inheritance that's supposed to be given. No one is found
worthy to open it. If you do not understand what is lost without the opening of
that scroll, you cannot understand the ending of the earth that unfolds so that
you and I can gain God's eternal inheritance.

What is this inheritance? It is all the blessings of God that we have in Jesus
Christ. Second Peter 1.

3 says that it's all things that pertain to life and godliness. If that scroll
can't be opened, that's lost. Second Peter 1.

4 says that you and I are partakers of the divine nature of God through Jesus
Christ. If this scroll can't be opened, that's lost. Acts 1.

8 talks about the power, the anointing of the Holy Spirit in your life. Without
this scroll being opened, that inheritance is lost. The fruit of the Spirit,
love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness,
self-control, lost if this cannot be opened.

Forgiveness of sins, our freedom from guilt. First John 1. 9 talks about that.

Romans 8. 1 talks about that. Unless this can be opened, it's lost.

The victory that you have over sin, the freedom from the bondage of sin that
we're going to experience in all of eternity, it's lost unless this can be
opened. Romans 8. 37 says that we are more than conquerors in all things through
Jesus Christ.

But if this scroll can't be opened, we are lost. An abundance of grace is given
to us for every good work. Second Corinthians 9.

8 says we have an understanding of the mystery of God's will. Ephesians 1. 9
says.

Romans 8. 14 reminds us we have God's guidance through his Spirit. Matthew 5
talks about the blessings of God that Jesus Christ wants to give to us.

That's all lost without the opening of this scroll. This is the eternal
inheritance of God for his saints. Ephesians 2.

6 says that we are seated in heavenly places with Christ, but only if the
inheritance can be gained. And so when John hears these words, there is no one
worthy. He hears something that you and I need to experience.

He hears a promise that would not be able to be kept. It was written down, but
no one could unseal it. It was right there.

It was available, but no one could reveal it. He hears of being right on the
edge of a joy, the greatest joy in life that would never be realized. We need to
experience this to understand the book of Revelation.

Because if I don't understand what it means that no one was worthy to open this
scroll, I don't understand the importance of the inheritance. And if I don't
understand the importance of the inheritance, I don't understand why this world
has to pass away so that that inheritance can be gained. Feel this with me for
just a moment.

This is as if you're standing at a wedding and the bride is standing up in front
and the groom just doesn't show. And everyone, first of all, is uncomfortable.
But then some begin to weep because they hurt for that bride, a promise that
should be gained that's lost.

This is a couple awaiting a new baby, maybe their first baby, who suffers a
miscarriage. That's the kind of loss that is happening here. In fact, it's even
greater if that were possible because it's eternal loss.

John wept and wept. His grief was real because that sense of the loss that might
happen was so genuinely real. You want to understand the book of Revelation?

You got to understand why John wept. And when you begin to understand why John
wept, then it begins to be opened up to you and I what God wants to do in our
lives. Now, in a moment of prayer today, I want to take a few moments together
just to experience the heart of God towards you.

As you pray, recognize all the promises of God that have been given to you in
Christ Jesus and say thank you for those promises. And thank you that those
promises aren't some false hope. Those promises aren't something that I've
conjured up in my mind.

Those promises are real. Those promises were gained on the cross. Those promises
were gained by an empty tomb, the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Those promises are gained by you sending your Spirit into my life. And those
promises will be gained in all of eternity by that same Jesus Christ, that same
Jesus Christ giving me this inheritance. So thank you that your promise will be
kept.

Thank you that I don't have to spend eternity weeping for what might have been.
I can spend eternity enjoying who you are. Thank you, Father.
